Yellow Rice Shrimp are a selectively bred Neocaridina davidi variety known for their bright yellow to golden coloration. Their color stands out especially well against dark substrates, green plants, mosses, and natural hardscape, making them an excellent choice for planted aquariums and dedicated shrimp colonies.

Like other Neocaridina varieties, Yellow Rice Shrimp are hardy, peaceful, and beginner-friendly. They spend much of their time grazing on biofilm, soft algae, microorganisms, and organic material throughout the aquarium. Once established in a stable environment, they can reproduce readily and develop into a thriving colony.

Aqua Huna specifically recommends an ideal cold-water shrimp temperature of 65–70°F, although Neocaridina can be maintained successfully across a broader stable range.

Recommended Setup: A mature, fully cycled aquarium containing live plants, mosses, driftwood, leaf litter, and plenty of established biofilm is ideal. Sponge filtration or a protected filter intake is recommended for breeding colonies to prevent tiny shrimplets from being pulled into the filter.

Yellow Rice Shrimp do not require the specialized active substrate and soft acidic water conditions of most Caridina shrimp. Stable, appropriately mineralized water is much more important. Suitable tap water can work very well when its parameters fall within the appropriate range.

Yellow Rice Shrimp naturally graze throughout the aquarium and should have access to established biofilm. Their diet can be supplemented with quality shrimp foods, algae-based foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich foods. Avoid overfeeding to maintain good water quality.

Please Note: Individual Yellow Rice Shrimp can naturally vary in yellow intensity, opacity, dorsal striping, size, and sex. Aqua Huna customer feedback notes that some individuals may arrive paler yellow and that some can display a noticeable dorsal “racing stripe.” Males and females are selected randomly.

Important: Yellow Rice Shrimp can interbreed with other Neocaridina davidi color strains. If maintaining a consistent yellow breeding line is important, keep them separately from Red Cherry, Blue Velvet, Orange, Green Jade, Rili, and other Neocaridina varieties.
