Fish Acclimation Guide
Give your new fish the best possible start. Shipping can be stressful for fish, and proper acclimation helps them gradually adjust to the temperature and water conditions in their new aquarium.
Before you start
Make sure the aquarium is ready.
Your aquarium should be fully cycled, temperature-stable, and ready for your new fish. Have a clean aquarium-safe container and net ready before opening the shipping bag.
Float the Bag
Keep the bag sealed and float it in your aquarium for 15–20 minutes. This allows the temperature inside the bag to gradually adjust to your aquarium.
Transfer to a Container
After floating, open the bag and carefully pour the fish and shipping water into a clean aquarium-safe container.
Add Aquarium Water
Add aquarium water to the container equal to approximately 50% of the original shipping-water volume.
Wait 15 minutes.
Repeat
Add approximately the same amount of aquarium water again and wait another 15 minutes.
This gradual process helps your fish adjust to the water conditions in their new aquarium.
Introduce Your Fish
Gently net the fish from the container and place it into the aquarium.
Do not pour the shipping water into your aquarium. Discard the shipping water after the fish has been transferred.
After acclimation
Give them time to settle in.
Your new fish may hide, appear less colorful, or behave cautiously at first. Give them time to adjust and avoid unnecessary handling after introduction.
