Silvertip Tetra

Scientific Name: Hasemania nana

The Silvertip Tetra is an active South American schooling fish known for its metallic copper-gold body and distinctive bright silver-white tips on its fins. Males typically develop stronger copper coloration, while females tend to be lighter and more silvery. Unlike most tetras, Silvertip Tetras also lack an adipose fin.

Silvertip Tetras are hardy, adaptable fish that work well in active community aquariums. They should be kept in a proper school, which helps them feel secure and display their best coloration and social behavior. They can occasionally become fin-nippy when kept in insufficient numbers, so a larger group and active, short-finned tankmates are preferred.

Recommended Setup: Provide plenty of open swimming room along with planted areas, driftwood, and other cover around the aquarium. Silvertip Tetras are active swimmers and look especially impressive when maintained as a larger school. Darker substrate and slightly subdued lighting can help emphasize their metallic coloration. Avoid housing them with slow-moving, long-finned fish that may become targets for occasional fin-nipping. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes or small pellets along with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
