The Shubunkin is a hardy single-tailed goldfish known for its beautiful calico coloration and streamlined body shape. Individual fish can display unique combinations of blue, white, orange, red, and black markings, creating a colorful mottled pattern that makes every Shubunkin different. Their active swimming behavior and cold-water tolerance make them especially popular for outdoor ponds.

Shubunkins are peaceful, social goldfish that can be maintained with other single-tailed goldfish and compatible pond fish. Although these fish are only approximately 2.5–3.5 inches when sold, they grow substantially larger and require significantly more space as adults. With proper care, Shubunkins can become large, long-lived pond fish.

Recommended Setup: A mature, well-filtered aquarium or outdoor pond with excellent oxygenation and plenty of open swimming space. Strong biological filtration is important because goldfish produce substantial waste as they grow. Feed a quality goldfish or pond-fish pellet supplemented with appropriate vegetable-based foods. Shubunkins may dig around plants and eat softer vegetation, so hardy plants and securely anchored landscaping are recommended.
