Product Information
Scientific Name: Caridina cantonensis
Common Name: Red King Kong Shrimp / RKK Shrimp
The Red King Kong Shrimp is a striking Taiwan Bee Caridina variety prized for its deep red coloration and contrasting white markings. Individual patterns can range from predominantly red shrimp with smaller white markings to more distinctly banded or Panda-like patterns, making each shrimp unique.
Red King Kong Shrimp are best suited for aquarists with experience maintaining soft-water Caridina. They require stable, acidic water with very low KH and generally perform best in a mature aquarium using active buffering substrate and remineralized RO/DI water. Sudden changes in temperature, TDS, or mineral content should be avoided. Current specialty care references recommend roughly 68–76°F, pH 6.0–6.5, GH 3–5, KH 0–2, and TDS around 100–150 ppm.
Care Level: Intermediate–Advanced
Temperament: Peaceful
Adult Size: Approximately 1–1.25 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 5 gallons; 10+ gallons preferred for greater stability
Temperature: 68–75°F
pH: 6.0–6.5
GH: 3–5 dGH
KH: 0–1 dKH
TDS: Approximately 100–150 ppm
Diet: Omnivore / Biofilm & Algae Grazer
Recommended Group Size: 6–10+
Breeding: Breeds entirely in freshwater under appropriate Caridina conditions.
Recommended Setup: A mature Caridina-specific aquarium is strongly recommended. Use an active buffering substrate to maintain acidic, low-KH water along with mosses, driftwood, plants, leaf litter, and plenty of established biofilm. Sponge filtration or a shrimp-safe protected intake should be used, particularly if you intend to breed them.
For consistent parameters, RO/DI water remineralized with a Caridina-appropriate GH mineral is preferable. Stability matters more than chasing an exact number, so avoid rapid adjustments to pH, GH, KH, temperature, or TDS.
Red King Kongs spend much of their time grazing on naturally occurring biofilm, algae, and microorganisms. Supplement this with high-quality shrimp foods and occasional protein-rich foods while feeding conservatively to protect water quality.
Please Note: Red King Kong Shrimp naturally vary in red intensity, white coverage, pattern, size, and sex. The shrimp received will not necessarily have identical patterns to the specimen shown in product photography. Aqua Huna selects males and females randomly and does not guarantee a particular sex ratio.
IMPORTANT: Red King Kong Shrimp require specialized soft, acidic, low-KH Caridina conditions. They should not be maintained using standard Neocaridina/Cherry Shrimp parameters.
