Product Information
Scientific Name: Caridina cantonensis
Common Name: Crystal Red Shrimp / Red Bee Shrimp
Grade: S Grade
The Red Crystal Shrimp is one of the most recognizable Caridina shrimp in the aquarium hobby, prized for its crisp red-and-white coloration and striking banded pattern. Grade S Crystal Reds offer attractive white coverage and strong contrast, making them an excellent choice for planted shrimp aquariums and dedicated Caridina colonies. Aqua Huna specifically sells this line as Grade S.
Unlike common Neocaridina shrimp, Crystal Reds require soft, slightly acidic water with very low carbonate hardness. They perform best in a mature, stable aquarium using active buffering substrate and remineralized RO/DI water. Stability is particularly important because Caridina are much less tolerant of rapid changes in water chemistry.
Care Level: Moderate–Advanced
Temperament: Peaceful
Adult Size: Approximately 1–1.2 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 5–10 gallons
Temperature: 68–75°F
pH: 5.8–6.8

TDS: Approximately 100–160 ppm
Diet: Omnivore / Biofilm Grazer
Recommended Group Size: 8–10+ shrimp
Breeding: Breeds completely in freshwater under stable Caridina conditions.
Recommended Setup: A mature shrimp aquarium with active buffering substrate, mosses, plants, leaf litter, driftwood, and plenty of established biofilm is ideal. Sponge filtration or a protected filter intake should be used to prevent small shrimp and shrimplets from being pulled into the filter. For consistent results, remineralized RO/DI water is strongly recommended rather than attempting to continually adjust unsuitable tap water.
Crystal Red Shrimp spend much of the day grazing on biofilm, algae, and microorganisms. Supplement this natural food supply with a quality shrimp food, algae-based foods, and occasional protein-rich shrimp foods. Avoid overfeeding, as maintaining excellent water quality is more important than providing large quantities of food.
Please Note: You are purchasing S Grade Red Crystal Shrimp. Individual shrimp will naturally vary in red-and-white pattern, color coverage, size, and sex. Grade refers primarily to coloration and pattern characteristics and does not mean every individual will look identical. Aqua Huna selects males and females randomly and does not guarantee a specific sex ratio.
IMPORTANT: Crystal Red Shrimp should not be kept using standard Neocaridina/Cherry Shrimp water parameters. They require softer, more acidic water with very low KH. A mature Caridina-specific setup is strongly recommended.
