Red Cherry Shrimp are one of the most popular and recognizable freshwater dwarf shrimp in the aquarium hobby. Their bright red coloration stands out beautifully against green plants, mosses, driftwood, and darker substrates, while their small size makes them an excellent choice for planted aquariums and dedicated shrimp tanks.

Unlike the Caridina shrimp we just finished, Red Cherry Shrimp are considerably more forgiving of water chemistry and are an excellent choice for newer shrimp keepers. They thrive in mature, stable aquariums and readily graze on biofilm, algae, detritus, and microorganisms throughout the day. They also reproduce readily in freshwater when conditions are suitable.

Recommended Setup: A fully cycled, mature aquarium with plants, mosses, driftwood, leaf litter, and plenty of established biofilm is ideal. Sponge filtration is excellent for shrimp colonies because it provides gentle filtration while preventing small shrimplets from being pulled into the filter.

Unlike Crystal Reds, King Kongs, Galaxy shrimp, and other soft-water Caridina, Red Cherry Shrimp do not require active buffering substrate or RO/DI water under normal circumstances. Stable, appropriately mineralized tap water can work very well provided it falls within suitable parameters. Stability is more important than constantly trying to adjust the water to an exact number.

Red Cherry Shrimp naturally spend much of the day grazing. Supplemental shrimp pellets, algae-based foods, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein-rich shrimp foods can be offered in moderation. Avoid overfeeding, and ensure ammonia and nitrite remain at zero.

Important: Different Neocaridina davidi color varieties can interbreed. If maintaining a consistent Red Cherry line is important, avoid mixing them with Blue Velvet, Orange, Yellow, Rili, and other Neocaridina color strains, as offspring may eventually revert toward wild-type coloration.
