Product Information
Scientific Name: Pristella maxillaris
The Pristella Tetra, commonly known as the X-Ray Tetra, is a peaceful freshwater schooling fish recognized for its translucent body, which gives it its distinctive “X-ray” appearance. Yellow, black, and white markings on the dorsal and anal fins add contrast, while the tail often develops a subtle reddish coloration.
Pristella Tetras are hardy, adaptable, and beginner-friendly. Unlike many South American tetras that strongly favor soft, acidic conditions, this species tolerates a relatively wide range of water chemistry. They are peaceful community fish and should be maintained in a proper school for confident behavior and the best overall display.

Recommended Setup: A planted community aquarium with open swimming space is ideal. Provide live plants, driftwood, and other areas of cover while leaving plenty of room for the school to swim through the middle of the aquarium. Their adaptability makes them suitable for a wider range of community setups than many tetras. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes or micro pellets supplemented with small frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia.
Please Note: Pristella Tetras naturally vary in size, sex, coloration, and transparency. Recently transported or stressed fish may initially appear pale, with stronger coloration developing after becoming established. Male and female fish are selected at random, and a specific sex or ratio cannot be guaranteed. The fish you receive may not look exactly like the individual pictured.
