Scientific Name: Aulonocara jacobfreibergi “Lemon Jake”

The Lemon Jake Peacock is a striking Lake Malawi African cichlid known for the dramatic blue-and-yellow coloration of mature males. Developed as a selectively bred yellow line of Aulonocara jacobfreibergi, males can develop brilliant lemon-yellow coloration across the body and fins contrasted by metallic blue across the face and body.

Lemon Jakes belong to the more rock- and cave-oriented jacobfreibergi group of Peacocks. They can also be somewhat more assertive than many other Aulonocara, particularly mature males defending territory.

Recommended Setup: Provide fine sand with substantial rockwork, caves, overhangs, and visual barriers while retaining open swimming areas. Strong filtration, good oxygenation, and stable alkaline water are important. Lemon Jakes can be housed with appropriately selected Peacocks and Haps, while aggressive Mbuna are generally poor companions.

Feed a quality African cichlid pellet as the staple diet supplemented with suitable frozen or prepared foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and similar invertebrate-based foods. A varied diet helps maintain condition and coloration.

Please Note: Juvenile and female Lemon Jake Peacocks will not necessarily display the brilliant yellow and blue coloration seen in mature dominant males. Color varies according to sex, age, genetics, dominance, and environment. Unless specifically stated otherwise, sex and exact coloration are not guaranteed.
