Kuhli Loach

Scientific Name: Pangio kuhlii

The Kuhli Loach is a peaceful and unique freshwater bottom-dweller known for its slender, eel-like body, dark banding, and playful behavior. These fascinating loaches spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the aquarium, weaving through plants, searching the substrate for food, and resting together in sheltered areas.

Kuhli Loaches are social fish and should be kept in groups, with six or more recommended for natural behavior and increased confidence. They are most active during the evening and in subdued lighting and may remain hidden when first introduced to an aquarium. Once comfortable, groups can become surprisingly active. Their peaceful temperament makes them an excellent addition to established community aquariums with similarly peaceful tank mates.

Recommended Setup: A mature, well-filtered aquarium with a soft sand or very smooth substrate, plenty of hiding places, driftwood, plants, caves, and shaded areas. Keep Kuhli Loaches in groups of at least six and provide sinking foods that reach the bottom, supplemented with appropriately sized frozen or live foods. A secure lid and protected filter intakes are strongly recommended, as Kuhli Loaches can squeeze through surprisingly small openings.
