Scientific Name: Oryzias latipes “Red Cap”

The Koi Medaka Ricefish is a selectively bred Japanese Ricefish variety prized for its distinctive koi-inspired coloration. This Red Cap variety develops contrasting coloration with orange to reddish markings concentrated around the head and upper body, creating an eye-catching appearance despite its small adult size.

Koi Medaka are peaceful, hardy, and social fish that can be maintained in planted aquariums, patio tubs, and appropriately maintained outdoor ponds. Unlike most tropical aquarium fish, Medaka prefer cooler conditions and tolerate a broad range of temperatures. They are active near the surface and display their best natural behavior when maintained in groups.

Recommended Setup: A mature, well-filtered aquarium, patio tub, or appropriately maintained outdoor pond with gentle water movement and plenty of surface swimming space. Live plants and floating vegetation provide cover and encourage natural behavior and spawning. A secure lid or adequate floating plant coverage is recommended because Medaka can jump. Feed quality small pellets or flakes supplemented with appropriately sized live and frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small invertebrates.
