Product Information
Scientific Name: Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
The German Blue Ram is one of the most popular South American dwarf cichlids in the aquarium hobby. Its combination of electric-blue iridescent spotting, golden-yellow coloration, black markings, red eyes, and colorful fins makes it an impressive centerpiece fish despite its small adult size. The species originates from the Orinoco drainage of Venezuela and Colombia.
German Blue Rams are generally peaceful but require more specialized care than their small size might suggest. They thrive in very warm, clean, stable water and should only be introduced to a mature, biologically established aquarium. They can become territorial when breeding, but are otherwise well suited to carefully selected peaceful tankmates that tolerate the same high temperatures.
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful / Mildly Territorial When Breeding
Adult Size: Approximately 2 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons recommended
Temperature: 81–86°F
pH: 4.0–7.0
Hardness: 1–10 dGH
Diet: Omnivore / Benthic Forager
Origin: Venezuela & Colombia, South America
Recommended Setup: Provide a mature aquarium with a soft sand substrate, driftwood, plants, caves, shaded areas, and flat rocks that can serve as potential spawning sites. Water movement should remain relatively gentle. German Blue Rams naturally sift through substrate while searching for food and should never be introduced into a new or biologically immature aquarium.
Feed a varied diet of appropriately sized sinking pellets or granules supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and other small foods. Because Rams naturally forage around the substrate, make sure some food reaches the lower portion of the aquarium.
Please Note: German Blue Rams may vary naturally in blue coloration, gold coloration, black markings, size, and fin development. Juveniles may display less intense coloration than mature specimens. Males generally become somewhat larger with more extended fins, while mature females may develop a pinkish-red belly, but young fish can be difficult to sex reliably. Unless specifically stated otherwise, fish are sold unsexed.
