Scientific Name: Thorichthys meeki

The Firemouth Cichlid is a classic Central American cichlid known for the brilliant red-orange coloration that develops across its throat and underside. Adults also develop iridescent blue highlights, dark lateral markings, and an impressive threat display where they flare their gill covers and expose the bright red throat.

Compared with many similarly sized Central American cichlids, Firemouths are relatively manageable, but they are still territorial—particularly when a pair is breeding. They spend considerable time around the bottom of the aquarium and naturally sift substrate while searching for food.

Recommended Setup: Provide a soft sand substrate along with driftwood, smooth rocks, caves, and other structures that create distinct territories and break lines of sight. Firemouths naturally sift through substrate, making sand preferable to coarse or sharp gravel. Good filtration and consistently clean water are important, and they should be introduced to a biologically mature aquarium.

Offer a varied diet consisting of quality cichlid pellets or granules supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Some vegetable matter should also be incorporated into the diet.

Please Note: Juvenile Firemouth Cichlids will generally have less intense coloration than mature adults. Their characteristic red-orange throat and iridescent coloration become more pronounced as they mature. Younger fish can also be difficult to sex reliably. Adult males generally become larger and develop longer dorsal and anal-fin extensions.
