Scientific Name: Labidochromis caeruleus
The Electric Yellow Lab Cichlid, commonly called the Yellow Lab, is a popular Lake Malawi African cichlid known for its brilliant yellow body contrasted by striking black markings along the fins. Its intense coloration, manageable adult size, and comparatively mild temperament have made it one of the most popular Mbuna in the aquarium hobby.
Yellow Labs are still African cichlids and can become territorial, particularly during breeding, but they are generally less aggressive than many other Mbuna. They are best maintained in a properly designed Lake Malawi aquarium with hard, alkaline water, strong filtration, and plenty of rocky territories and caves.

Recommended Setup: Provide a sand substrate with substantial rockwork arranged to create caves, territories, and visual barriers while leaving some open swimming space. Strong filtration and stable, hard, alkaline water are important. Yellow Labs can be maintained with appropriately selected Lake Malawi cichlids, but tank size, stocking levels, sex ratios, and individual temperament should always be considered.
Feed a quality African cichlid pellet or flake with a significant plant-based component such as spirulina, supplemented appropriately with other foods. Seriously Fish specifically recommends vegetable matter forming a substantial part of the diet.
