Electric Blue Acara

Scientific Name: Andinoacara pulcher — Electric Blue variety

The Electric Blue Acara is a brilliant selectively bred form of the Blue Acara, prized for its intense metallic-blue coloration covering nearly the entire body. Even younger fish display impressive blue coloration, often complemented by darker patterning and orange edging along the dorsal fin.

Unlike many medium-sized cichlids, Electric Blue Acaras are generally relatively peaceful and adaptable. They can work well in appropriately planned South American community aquariums with similarly sized fish such as Severums, Geophagus, and Angelfish. Territorial behavior can increase when a pair is spawning, but overall they're considerably easier to manage than aggressive species such as Green Terrors.

Recommended Setup: Provide a mature aquarium with good filtration, open swimming space, and a sand or smooth substrate. Driftwood, rocks, caves, and hardy plants can be used to create sheltered areas and visual barriers. A pair may select and clean a flat surface when preparing to spawn and can become more territorial while guarding eggs or fry.

Feed a varied omnivorous diet consisting of quality cichlid pellets or granules supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and other appropriately sized foods. Some vegetable-based foods can also be included for dietary variety.
