Clown Loach (1.5–1.75")

Scientific Name: Chromobotia macracanthus

The Clown Loach is one of the most recognizable freshwater loaches, known for its bright orange body, three bold black bands, and active, playful personality. These intelligent bottom-dwelling fish are highly social and often interact with one another while exploring the aquarium, resting together, and searching the substrate for food.

Clown Loaches are sold as small juveniles but grow into very large, long-lived aquarium fish and should only be purchased with their adult requirements in mind. They are strongly social and should be maintained in groups of at least 5–6 whenever possible. With proper care, Clown Loaches can live for many years and become impressive centerpiece inhabitants of a large freshwater aquarium.

Recommended Setup: A large, mature, well-filtered aquarium with excellent water quality, high oxygen levels, moderate water movement, a soft sand or smooth substrate, driftwood, caves, shaded hiding areas, and plenty of swimming space. Clown Loaches should be maintained in groups and fed a varied diet of quality sinking foods, frozen or live foods, and vegetable matter. A secure aquarium lid is recommended, as loaches may jump.
