Product Information

Scientific Name: Gyrinocheilus aymonieri

The Chinese Algae Eater is a hardy and active freshwater fish known for its strong algae-grazing behavior and distinctive sucker-like mouth. Juveniles spend much of their time attached to aquarium glass, rocks, driftwood, and other surfaces while searching for algae and biofilm.

Chinese Algae Eaters are especially active algae grazers when young, but their behavior can change as they mature. Adults may become territorial toward other bottom-dwelling fish and slower-moving tankmates, so proper tank size, hiding areas, and careful tankmate selection are important.

Care Level: Easy–Moderate
Temperament: Semi-Aggressive / Territorial as Adults
Adult Size: Approximately 8–10 inches
Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons
Temperature: 72–82°F
pH: 6.0–8.0
Diet: Omnivore / Algae & Biofilm Grazer

Recommended Setup: A well-filtered aquarium with plenty of swimming space, rocks, driftwood, caves, and other hiding areas. Natural algae and biofilm should be supplemented with quality sinking foods, algae wafers, and vegetable-based foods.

Important: Chinese Algae Eaters are different from Siamese Algae Eaters. While juveniles are often purchased for algae control, Chinese Algae Eaters grow considerably larger and may become territorial as they mature.

Please Note: Live fish naturally vary in size, coloration, pattern, and appearance. The fish you receive may not look exactly like the individual pictured.
