Scientific Name: Mikrogeophagus altispinosus
The Bolivian Ram is a peaceful South American dwarf cichlid known for its subtle gold coloration, dark markings, red-edged fins, and calm but curious personality. Compared with many larger cichlids, Bolivian Rams are relatively peaceful and can work well in carefully planned community aquariums.
Bolivian Rams naturally spend considerable time near the bottom searching through sand for small food items. They're also generally more tolerant of cooler temperatures than German Blue Rams, making them an excellent alternative for aquarists who want a Ram without maintaining an especially warm aquarium.

Recommended Setup: A soft, fine sand substrate is strongly recommended because Bolivian Rams naturally take mouthfuls of substrate and sift it for food. Provide driftwood, shaded areas, plants, caves, and flat stones that can also serve as spawning sites. Avoid excessive current and introduce them only to established, biologically mature aquariums with stable water quality.
Feed a varied diet of appropriately sized sinking pellets or granules along with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Because they spend much of their time feeding near the bottom, make sure food actually reaches them rather than being consumed entirely by faster surface-feeding tankmates.
Please Note: Bolivian Rams may vary naturally in coloration, markings, size, and sex. Adult males generally grow larger and develop somewhat longer fins, but juveniles can be difficult to sex reliably. Unless specifically stated otherwise, fish are sold unsexed and exact coloration is not guaranteed.
