Scientific Name: Hyphessobrycon megalopterus
The Black Phantom Tetra is a peaceful South American tetra known for its smoky silver-gray body, prominent black shoulder marking, and elegant dark fins. Mature males can develop impressive enlarged black fins and frequently display toward one another, creating interesting social behavior within a group without typically causing serious aggression.
Black Phantom Tetras are hardy, adaptable community fish that are suitable for both newer and experienced aquarists. They are social fish and should be maintained in a proper group, where they become more confident and display more natural behavior and coloration. Males tend to become darker with more pronounced finnage, while females generally have fuller bodies and reddish coloration in their fins.

Recommended Setup: A planted aquarium with open swimming space and areas of cover is ideal. Dark substrate, driftwood, live plants, and slightly subdued lighting can complement their darker coloration. Keep Black Phantom Tetras in a good-sized group with other peaceful community fish. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes or small pellets supplemented with appropriately sized frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
