Scientific Name: Nematobrycon palmeri (Black variety)
The Black Emperor Tetra is a striking color variety of the Emperor Tetra known for its deep black coloration, iridescent blue-to-purple highlights, and brilliant blue-green eyes. Mature males can develop especially impressive coloration and elongated finnage, giving this tetra a much more dramatic appearance than many common schooling species.
Black Emperor Tetras are peaceful, active community fish that do best when maintained in groups. Unlike tightly schooling species such as Rummynose Tetras, Emperor Tetras tend to form a looser social group, with males occasionally displaying and sparring with one another. Providing sufficient space, plants, and visual barriers allows these natural behaviors without excessive competition.

Recommended Setup: A planted aquarium with open swimming space, driftwood, and areas of cover is ideal. Dark substrate, floating plants, and subdued lighting can help emphasize their deep coloration and iridescent eyes. Keep them with other peaceful community fish and provide enough space for males to establish small display areas. Feed a varied diet of quality flakes or small pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.

Mature males may develop darker coloration and more elongated fins, while females can appear more subdued.
