Scientific Name: Ambystoma mexicanum

Assorted Hybrid Albino & Gold Axolotls are captive-bred color varieties of the fully aquatic Mexican axolotl. These animals can display pale albino, cream, yellow, or golden coloration, along with the characteristic feathery external gills that make axolotls one of the most distinctive animals in the freshwater aquarium hobby.

Because this is an assorted hybrid listing, exact coloration is not guaranteed. Aqua Huna specifically notes that its current batch is paler than the animals pictured, so customers should expect natural variation rather than purchasing this product for one exact shade of gold.

Recommended Setup: Axolotls require a fully cycled cool-water aquarium with excellent water quality, gentle filtration, low water movement, subdued lighting, and multiple hiding areas. A long aquarium footprint is preferable because axolotls spend most of their time along the bottom.

Substrate: Bare-bottom tanks or appropriately fine sand are recommended. Avoid gravel, pebbles, and other substrate pieces that can be swallowed while the axolotl is feeding.

Temperature Warning: Axolotls are not tropical aquarium animals. Maintain water around 60–68°F and avoid prolonged exposure to warm water. Depending on ambient room temperature, an aquarium fan or dedicated chiller may be required. Specialty axolotl sellers likewise recommend the 60–68°F range.

Diet: Feed a protein-rich carnivorous diet. Appropriately sized earthworms/nightcrawlers make an excellent staple, supplemented with quality sinking axolotl or carnivore pellets and other suitable protein-rich foods.

Tankmates: Keeping axolotls individually is generally the safest option. Fish can nip their delicate external gills, while smaller fish may be eaten. Multiple axolotls can also injure one another, particularly when animals are significantly different in size.
