Apistogramma “Viejita Gold” is a striking selectively bred dwarf cichlid known for its bright golden-yellow base coloration, contrasting red-orange markings, dark accents, and beautiful finnage. Mature males typically develop the strongest coloration and more pronounced fins, creating an impressive centerpiece for a carefully designed freshwater aquarium.

This fish is commonly sold in the aquarium trade under the name “Viejita Gold.” However, true Apistogramma viejita is uncommon in the hobby, and fish sold commercially under this name are often associated with selectively bred Apistogramma macmasteri lines. For that reason, Felipe’s Fish uses the established trade name rather than representing these fish as confirmed pure A. viejita.

Like other Apistogramma, Viejita Gold are compact cichlids with plenty of personality. They spend much of their time exploring the lower portions of the aquarium and establishing territories around caves, plants, driftwood, and other structures.

Recommended Setup: A mature, well-filtered aquarium with a fine sand substrate, live plants, driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and plenty of visual barriers. Multiple secure hiding areas are especially important when keeping a pair or multiple dwarf cichlids.

Feed a varied diet of high-quality, appropriately sized prepared foods supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small aquatic foods.

Behavior & Tankmates: Viejita Gold Apistogramma can be kept with carefully selected peaceful community fish. They may become considerably more territorial when spawning, particularly around caves and established territories. Avoid aggressive tankmates and excessive competition from other bottom-dwelling species.

Breeding: Like closely related Apistogramma in the macmasteri complex, these fish are cave-spawning dwarf cichlids. Females establish and defend protected spawning territories while caring for their eggs and developing fry.
