Apistogramma trifasciata is a striking South American dwarf cichlid known for its iridescent blue coloration, distinctive dark horizontal markings, extended dorsal fin, and compact size. Mature males can develop beautiful metallic blue tones and elongated finnage, while females typically remain smaller and can display vivid yellow coloration, particularly when breeding.

Native to portions of South America within the Paraguay and Paraná river systems, this species naturally occurs in shallow, slow-moving habitats with dense vegetation and plenty of submerged cover.

Despite its small size, A. trifasciata displays the personality and complex behavior that make Apistogramma so popular with dwarf-cichlid enthusiasts. These fish spend much of their time exploring the lower portions of the aquarium and establishing territories around plants, driftwood, caves, and other structures.

Recommended Setup: A mature, well-filtered aquarium with sand or another fine substrate, dense planting, driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and plenty of visual barriers. Multiple hiding areas and defined territories are particularly important when keeping a pair or multiple dwarf cichlids.

Feed a varied diet of high-quality, appropriately sized prepared foods supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small aquatic foods.

Behavior & Tankmates: Three Stripe Apistos can be maintained with carefully selected peaceful community fish. Like other Apistogramma, however, they may become considerably more territorial when breeding. Avoid aggressive species and overly competitive bottom-dwelling tankmates.

Breeding: Apistogramma trifasciata is a substrate/cavity-spawning dwarf cichlid. Females establish a protected spawning territory and provide dedicated care to the eggs and developing fry, becoming noticeably more territorial during this period.
