Apistogramma hongsloi – Form II is a striking South American dwarf cichlid known for its vibrant red-orange coloration, contrasting dark markings, subtle blue-green iridescence, and impressive finnage. Mature males typically develop the strongest coloration, while females remain smaller and may display brighter yellow tones, particularly during breeding.

Native forms of Apistogramma hongsloi originate from the Orinoco River drainage of Colombia and Venezuela, where they inhabit slower-moving waters with vegetation, submerged wood, leaf litter, and other natural cover.

Like other Apistogramma, Hongsloi are small fish with surprisingly complex behavior. They spend much of their time exploring the lower portions of the aquarium, establishing territories around caves and structure, and interacting with their surroundings.

Recommended Setup: A mature, well-filtered aquarium with a fine sand substrate, plants, driftwood, caves, leaf litter, and plenty of visual barriers. Multiple secure hiding areas are especially important when keeping a pair or multiple dwarf cichlids.

Feed a varied diet of high-quality, appropriately sized prepared foods supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and other small aquatic foods.

Behavior & Tankmates: Apistogramma hongsloi can be maintained with carefully selected peaceful community fish. However, they may become significantly more territorial when spawning. Avoid aggressive species and excessive competition from other bottom-dwelling fish.

Breeding: Apistogramma hongsloi is a cave-spawning dwarf cichlid. Females typically select and defend a protected spawning site and provide dedicated care to the eggs and developing fry.
