The Common Pleco is one of the most recognizable freshwater aquarium fish in the hobby. Known for their algae-eating behavior and armored body structure, these fish spend most of their time along the bottom of the aquarium grazing on algae, driftwood, and leftover food. As they mature, Common Plecos develop an impressive prehistoric appearance that makes them stand out in larger aquarium setups.

These fish thrive best in spacious aquariums with strong filtration, driftwood, hiding areas, and stable water conditions. While generally peaceful, Common Plecos can become territorial toward other bottom dwellers as they grow larger. They do well with larger peaceful community fish, cichlids, Silver Dollars, Giant Danios, and other sturdy tank mates.

Common Plecos enjoy a varied omnivore diet including algae wafers, sinking pellets, fresh vegetables like zucchini and cucumber, driftwood fiber, and occasional protein-rich foods. Providing driftwood is highly recommended to support digestion and overall health.

At Felipe’s Fish, all live fish are carefully inspected and packaged to ensure safe and healthy arrival. We recommend slow acclimation to reduce stress and help your new fish adjust comfortably into its aquarium.
